Help Lauren Labbe' Raise Money for Leukemia and Lymphoma!!
Midlife Crisis at 30??
10/19/04 UPDATE: With your help, I have exceeded my fundraising goal. So far together we have raised $3,518 for the LLS. However, I am still accepting donations, because people are still out there fighting this disease. This is what we can do to help make a difference! Thank you for supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society with me!
Dear Family and Friends,
Welcome to my Team in Training website. I hope this letter finds you all happy and well. Here is what I have been up to lately!
As many of you already know, I will be running in the Nike Marathon in San Francisco on October 24, 2004 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training.
Those who know me best know that I have recently been traumatized by my approaching 30th birthday. Traumatized because I had a list of “Things to Do Before I Turn 30.” Such as: 1. Get married. 2. Have kids. 3. Write a book. 4. Run a marathon???? Just to name a few items! Well, I hit the big 3-0 in March, and ALL of these goals are still “works in progress.” The marathon seemed to be something that I could surely check off the list, and feel good about accomplishing, so I was seriously considering this. Then just the other day an old friend of mine pushed this idea to the top of my list when she told me about Team in Training. Team in Training (TNT)is the largest endurance-training program in the U.S. They provide the coaching, training, nutritional advice and support that I need to run 26.2 miles! In exchange for the training and support, we raise money towards a cure for leukemia - the number one disease-killer of children under 15, and lymphoma, the leading killer of men and women under 35. I realized that my “List of Things to Do Before I Turn 30” was trivial considering others may just be fighting to live to turn 30. Did you know that every five minutes, someone in the US learns that they have leukemia, lymphoma, or myeloma? Did you know that every nine minutes, a child or adult dies from a blood related cancer? With these considerations in mind, I have decided to fulfill my own personal dream while helping and remembering those who are not as fortunate. So, I am compelled to run this marathon, because I can (with the help of Team in Training).
When I run each day, as well as on race day, I am running in memory of my grandfather “Gramps” who died of Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1985. Each TNT member also runs for a local patient or “Honored Hero.” I will be running in honor of David Cooper. He is a five year old who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphotic Leukemia. He is curently in remission, and he is my hero! I will think of Gramps and David whenever I feel I am lacking courage to go the extra mile! If you know any person whom is battling cancer (any form) or any person whom is lovingly remembered, I would be glad to run in honor or memory of them as well!
Here’s Where I Need Your Help!
Not only have I committed to running 26.2 miles, I have also committed myself to a fundraising goal of $3,400. Over 75% of your donation goes directly to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for research, patient services, advocacy and education! Your support, of The Society, and of me personally, is greatly appreciated. I am not sure which is more intimidating, the 26.2 miles or the fundraising goal of 3,400$. Still I am confident that with your help I can do it. Your donation is tax deductible!
Now back to that list…When I complete this marathon, I will be able to check it off my list of “Things to Do Before I Turn 30,”and yes, I will still be 30 on race day! I may even bring this list (which once seemed so important) to race day and destroy it when I finish. How important is it really to have a “deadline” for such goals in your life? What really matters is that you are LIVING it!
